How to Use the Printable Connect Four Games
These printable PDFs make it possible to play Connect Four without a physical game board or separate counters. All that is required is a printer and two differently colored pencils, pens, crayons, or markers.
Begin by downloading the format you prefer. The full-page version contains one large Connect Four board with 42 circles arranged in seven columns and six rows. The larger spaces provide plenty of room for coloring or marking each move. The four-board version places four complete games on one A4 sheet, making it practical for playing several rounds while using less paper.
Print the PDF at its original size. If any part of the design is cropped by your printer, select “Fit to page” in the print settings. Standard printer paper works well, although heavier paper can be useful when playing with markers.
The sheets can also be made reusable. Place a printed board inside a transparent document sleeve and use two different dry-erase pens. When the game is finished, wipe the sleeve clean and begin another round without printing a new copy.
Advantages of Playing Connect Four on Paper
A printable Connect Four game takes up very little storage space and does not require loose counters, batteries, or dedicated equipment. The sheets can be printed when needed and used at home, while travelling, during a workplace break, at a café, or as a relaxed tabletop activity with friends.
Playing on paper also creates a permanent record of each round. Players can review completed boards, identify missed opportunities and compare different strategies. The four-board sheet is particularly convenient for a short tournament or a best-of-three series.
Downloading a ready-made board from CraftyLibrary saves the time required to draw an accurate seven-by-six grid manually. Each PDF is formatted for A4 paper and designed with clear circles, even spacing and an economical black-and-white layout. The outlined heading and playing spaces may also be colored to give each printed sheet a more personalized appearance.
Basic Connect Four Rules
Connect Four is played by two people. Each player selects a different color and the players take turns marking one empty circle.
Moves must follow the same principle as counters dropping into a traditional vertical Connect Four board. A circle may therefore only be selected if it is in the bottom row or if the circle directly beneath it has already been marked. Players cannot begin in the middle of an empty column.
The winner is the first player to connect four circles of the same color. A winning line may be horizontal, vertical or diagonal. The round ends as soon as a player completes a line of four.
If all 42 circles are marked and neither player has connected four, the game ends in a draw. For a balanced series of games, alternate which player makes the first move in each new round.
